COM SUSHIL GHOSH

COM SUSHIL GHOSH

Com Sushil Ghosh (Sushil Da) was born on 02.07.1925 and brought up in his ancestral home at Jessore, now in Bangladesh. He was the second child but the eldest son. Historically Sushil da was the decedents of the Army General of Raja Pratapaditya of Jessore. Due to Second World War, the situation was very difficult and he came to Calcutta permanently in 1942 after his matriculation for a job and he took up a job on daily wages basis in Dum Dum Gun & Shell factory, as a 'viewer'. At that time, he witnessed and faced the depth of sufferings of the average people of the society. After sometime, he was transferred to Cossipore Gun & Shell factory. At that time he was inspired by the devotion and activities of one of his uncle Mr Arabinda Ghosh, who was one of the founders and leaders of Bata Mazdoor union. His dedication, honesty and simple life-style greatly inspired and influenced him to choose the Trade Union activities as mission of life. After the end of world war in 1945, the whole Bengal witnessed a communal riot. By the end of 1945 he was retrenched. Though the riots did not affect much to his family physically but it severely affected them financially. At that time a job became a necessity for him due to economic burden and Sushil da joined Bank of India on 01.01.1947, in Calcutta Main branch drawing a total salary of Rs.112/-.

After joining the Bank within few days Sushil da became very active member of Bank of India Employees' Union from beginning. Due to his trade union convictions, he soon became a prominent trade unionists. He was taken as an EC member from 1948 and was elected as Asst. General Secretary in 1949 and General Secretary in 1951. In the same year Federation of bank of India Staff Unions was formed in Calcutta, by the major initiative of three units i.e Bombay, Ahmedebad & Calcutta on 06.05.1951. At that time the Bank had only 39 branches and 1800 staffs (Officers 300, Clerks 1200, Sub-staff 300). First all India strike was called by federation on 24th Dec 1951 the year Federation was formed. It was called off at Calcutta on 12.02.1952 but in Bombay it was continued for 42 days, where six leaders including Com. Chitnis were dismissed. It was withdrawn after the bank agreed to reinstate the six leaders. Sushil da became first time office bearer of AIBEA on 1951 in Delhi conference as an Asst. Secretary and continued to be an Asst. Secretary till 1959. He was again elected as Asst. Secretary for the second term in 1985 and continued till 1989. Com Sushil Da was one of the member represented from Bank of India in the Sastry Tribunal. Later in 1964 when AIBEA launched agitation for no more tribunals, only settlements, Com Sushil Da in the capacity of General Secretary of Bengal Province Bank Employees lead the agitations.

He also got admitted in City College, evening department for higher education and obtained his M.Com degree with a rank and also qualified the CAIIB in his first attempt. At that time he was not having any money to pay the examination fees, one of his friend, a Bank officer, lent him the fees. Sri Sushil Ghosh got married to a dignified, broad minded, accomplished and a highly educated lady, Smt Anjali Ghosh. She was a 'Prabashi' and spent her childhood and schooling in Delhi & Bombay, as her father was a senior ranking Central Government Officer. To show his respect for her, Sushil da mentioned that "She gave me a lot of strength, love and inspiration in all circumstances, during my difficult period which helped me to reach where I am today". Due to her family necessity, she joined Brahma Balika Shikshalaya as a teacher in 1963. They had a happy family with his daughter — Runa, son- Sudip, daughter-in-law Saberi and four grandsons. His wife played a key role for up-bringing of his children as he remained frequently absent for his Trade union activities.

He got repeated offers for career progression (for officer post) from our Bank neglect and endless sufferings. He had chosen this course of life by rejecting the life of and also from other banks but every time he rejected those offers. Once he was offered by former Chief Minister Late Jyoti Basu, a constituency to contest, but he had not accepted that. He was very simple man, always spent very simple life and very fond of Bengali food, sweet but disliked the Chinese food. Also used to say to his family members that "save that much what you required, huge savings may cause pain". He was a regular reader and used to read on regular basis. He retired from Bank's service on 31.07.1985 and devoted his entire life for the cause of workers, how the people at the bottom were exploited and suffered indignities.

Not only in Bank of India, Com Sushil Da expanded the trade union movement in other banks and industries. He was holding the prime post of Office Bearer (President) in Bengal Co-Op Employees Federation, Bank of Jaipur Employees Union (subsequently merged with State Bank of Jaipur & Bikaner), Dena Bank Employees Union, Indian Oil Employees Union, Founder President of Union Bank Employees Union, Bank of Rajasthan Bank Employees Union. To protest the wage cut to Bank of India Employees, he resigned from all his post. However, later in 1980s he was elected as President of Bank of India Employees Association and reaffirmed the majority with his dedicated leadership.

In last 5 to 10 years he used to visit union office i.e Kolkata main branch rarely due to his health condition as at that time he was a patient of Asthma. He used to narrate world and Indian history of freedom fighting to his grandsons. In his last phase of life - he was having a frustration that the new generation of staffs are not involving themselves in trade union activity. They are only interested in increment of wages and other financial issues. Sushilda attended the 28th conference of BPBEA in February 2016 and that was his last public meeting where he delivered a lecture for more than one and half hour. Sushilda realised that in long run all the unions have to fight together to achieve the industry wise legitimate demand.

Sushil da and Boudi celebrated their last anniversary on 8th May 2016, in a small family get together. At that time his wife (Boudi) was very ill. On the very next day she was admitted to hospital. After some days Sushil da was also admitted in the same hospital. Boudi died on 27th May 2016 and Sushil da took his last breath on 30th May 2016.

Leaders come and go, but the path carved by “Pitamaah” remains the North Star for every member of the Trade Union Movement. The trade Union Movement never forget the personality who possessed an abundant vitality, displayed limitless courage and abiding conviction of ideology.
